Okay, so if your trying to drive traffic to your website or blog and are in the beginning stages of learning how to do so you've probably read or heard about back links
What is a back link you ask? It's a link from another site to your site. Why do you want back links? Google has a very complicated algorithm that figures out what websites to display when you do a search. An important part of this algorithm is back links. Google figures if a site is linked to by a lot of other sites it must be popular, and if it's popular it must be good so let's rank it high on our search engine.
You may have heard that social networking sites are a great place to get back links. You may have also heard from others that spending your time creating back links through social media sites is a waste of time because of the "no follow" tag many of these sites have.
What is a no follow tag? Basically social networking sites know that people would create millions of accounts and spam their site for back links so many sites have put in the no follow tag to eliminate this problem. If someone tries to build back links they won't follow so that person is wasting their time.
It's a fallacy however that ALL social media sites have no follow tags. Actually many sites provide great opportunities for you to create back links. You just need to find them.
Were going to be embarking on a three part series where we tell you about some great sites that allow you to create back links. Today we'll discuss three of these sites, tomorrow three more, and finally three more so check back for parts two and three.
Three Great Places To Build Backlinks
Digg
Digg is a great place to generate traffic to your website. Not as powerful as it once was however none the less it's a HUGE online community. Not only do other members of Digg see articles you submit and they can "digg" them or "re-tweet" them or even "like" them on Facebook, but they are also followed by search engines.
Reddit
Reddit is an article submission website somewhat similar to Digg. Reddit is extremely active and has very engaged users. The links you submit to Reddit will be follow links NOT no follow links. My one beef with Reddit is they often make you wait 8 minutes between posts which is extremely annoying when your trying to post some recent articles you wrote.
Yelp
Okay, so I'm sure your familiar with Yelp the ratings site where you give a review of your favorite burger place or that new mediterranian restaurant you checked out. Even if you aren't a big reviewer set up an account. You can put a link in your profile and the link in your profile is followed. Comemnt links however are no follow links.
