What Happenned To Jobvent.Com? Why The New Jobitorial SUCKS!!!! Glass Door To Blame

What is Jobvent?

If your already familiar with a site that used to be around called Jobvent.Com you probably used it in the past to screen a potential company you were interviewing with or considering taking a job with.

If your not familiar with Jobvent.Com, it's no longer around, however it used to be a site where people would review a company they worked for. It was a great site in that the reviews were uncensored so you could get a real feel for what a company was really like as opposed to just reading what they say on their website and in their hiring materials..."IT'S A GREAT PLACE TO WORK!!!" ...no surprise there right.

Was Jobvent a good resource for job seekers?

I personally found Jobvent to be a wonderful resource and many others did as well judging from the number of interest posts I see asking "where has jobvent gone?" ; "why does the new jobvent by glassdoor suck so much?" ; "are we living in communist China?"

Jobvent in my opinion was a fantastic resource. Did it give you an 100% accurate idea of what a company was like to work for? Probably not 100% idea of what it is like to work for a certain company but at least it gives you something besides the ra ra it's a great place to work spiel your going to get from viewing that companies career page. You'll actually hear some negatives be they with how the company treats it's employees or maybe not at all the fault of the company just negatives of a specific job or even industry.

Did Jobvent.Com have more negative reviews than positive ones? I would say probably yes but that's also to be expected. Most people are much quicker to write a review about a negative experience than a positive one. That's true whether reading restaurant reviews, contractor reviews, or even hotel reviews so no surprise there.

I think most people are intelligent enough to be able to figure out whether a review is one disgruntled employee or whether everyone hates working there. Maybe one specific region or manager isn't a great environment to work in but the rest of the comapny is fabulous.

Before Jobvent.Com turned into a shitty website called Jobitorial I would browse it sometimes looking for companies to work for other times just for entertainment. If a company overall had positive reviews and one or two really negative reviews I would probably guess maybe that person is disgruntled, maybe they weren't a great fit for the company, maybe they just didn't like the industry but it's probably still a good place to work.

If a company had many many many negative reviews it's probably not a very employee friendly place to work. If your a company like Met life for example who I'd read lots of reviews on, overall employees are happy and it's overall a pretty employee friendly company but I did notice a lot of negative reviews coming out of the North-East region of the country leading me to believe Met Life is a great company to work for but they may have a shitty manager or two out east.

Overall as this post is turning into a long one jobvent.com was a FANTASTIC site and Glass Door turned it into an incredibly shitty site now called Jobitorial which is a job review site that DOES NOT accept reviews...lol

Why Jobvent.Com Now Sucks

Well I suppose Jobvent.Com doesn't suck because it doesn't even exist. Now it's a site called Jobitorial.Com which sucks.

Rather than just telling you the new site is a shitty website though let's explore the depths of the shittiness.

1. Jobitorial.Com a site for people to post job/company reviews DOESN'T ACCEPT job reviews.

It's almost comical if it weren't so incredibly stupid.Jobitorial which is run by Glass Door bought Jobvent.Com a site for job reviews and decided it would purge reviews it felt like getting rid of and then not accept any new job reviews. Fantastic a job review site that doesn't accept job reviews. So what's the point?

2. Users only allowed one review per year.

Does anything encourage website participation and a vibrant online community like placing arbitrary limits on the number of jobs one can review? Have you worked for more than one employer in your lifetime?

If so and if you happened to stumble upon Jobitorial.Com you would have to pick one job to review and then wait a year to review another one.

We understand this to a point as they don't want one person with too much time on their hands writing negative or positive reviews all day long but there has to be a better way to referee this.

3. Most if not all negative reviews have been removed from the site

Have you previously posted something negative about a company or position to Jobvent.Com? If so check Jobitorial.Com. Chances are your review has been purged from the site. This shows no respect or gratitude for the time and effort the contributor took to post that to guide a future job seeker. Jobitorial.Com, a site based upon contributions from readers apparently thinks it can now shit all over the contributors. this is a surefire way to ruin a once good site and destroy any credibility the site previously had.

4. All comments are no longer on the site.

Comments were a great part of Jobvent.Com. If one person left a bad review other users could make comments. This allowed others in a similar role to maybe clarify some of the complaints of the previous contributor. In other situations if someone left a glowing review of a company someone else could say something like "Hey, that's my former boss writing the review, he sucked and so does the position, don't take it.".

On top of taking this feature of the site away from readers it's also a stupid move as a webmaster. Comments are a way of having and encouraging interaction with and between your readers. Shutting down a comments feature on a website is bad but erasing the previous five years of comments is an even worse move. It shows a lack of respect for readers and visitors and takes away an outside context or other take on a reviewers review.

5. JOBITORIAL STATES IN THE FAQ THEY WILL DISCLOSE INFORMATION ABOUT THEIR USER BASE EVEN IF NOT REQUIRED BY LAW TO PROTECT THEMSELVES OR OTHERS AHEAD OF YOUR ANONYMITY.

This is incredibly stupid for a variety of reasons. First off they have taken off all previous negative reviews as well as all comments and no longer offer new reviews so what do they have to fear in terms of reprisal from companies who don't like what's being said about them?

Next, we know courts have ruled newspaper sites don't have to turn over online article commenter information so why Jobitorial would is beyond me.

Being required by law to turn over information is one thing but coming right out and saying you will turn over information about your users even when not required by law in order to protect the site is scary. You have no privacy and should not open an account or make any comments on Jobitorial...Oh wait, you couldn't even if you wanted to.

The Real Reason Jobvent Sucks - On Purpose

Jobvent's purchaser owns a company called Glass Door. If you have heard of them it's probably because they have sent endless amounts of spam to your email inbox.

By creating a shitty site that sucks a fat "d" Jobitorial will send people to a competing site Glass Door which will then get your email address and send more spam to you.

By sucking, Jobitorial will serve to drive traffic to Glass Door, which in turn will allow Glass Door to send out more spam. Is this starting to make sense?

Jobvent was awesome. Jobitorial really sucks. It's sad as now the best you can hope for when trying to vent a future company before an interview is to maybe find a through a google search that someone asked about working for that company on Yahoo Answers or similar site.

I can thank the old Jobvent that they saved me from attending an interview and possibly working for the cult known as Enterprise Rent A Car as well as a number of other 100% commission sales job and pyramid type schemes.

I was going to end the article on this but there my previous comment made me think of something. You have to check out http://www.failingenterprise.com/. It's essentially whose sole purpose is to tell you how much it sucks working for enterprise rent a car. It's incredibly entertaining and you will find hours of entertaining reading there.

In the interim visit http://www.jobitorial.com/ and leave a comment or send a message letting them know their site sucks and to return it to it's former glory as http://www.jobvent.com/. Bring back comments, stop censoring opinions and stop sending out glass door spam.

  1. It's been a long while but I wanted to check something on JobVent, which I used to do whenever I was pondering a change to a larger company. No more JobVent, just the shitty site described above.

Good example is Lockheed Martin. I left for a lot of reasons, and there were hundreds of similar reviews from folks on the same topics. There are a lot of great people there, but tt was moreso a good organization for the inept to hide and for nepotism/buddyism to go unchecked. Now if I search--they've got all 4s and 5s...go figure.

So much for getting the real truth out, looks like it is high time for someone to start another similar site.

    3. Frank, I have a lot of projects on my plate right now however I'd be happy to contribue in any way possible. Maybe do some link exchanges and banner exchanges with you. Maybe do some guest blogging. I'd definately be happy to leave some reviews of some of my past employers. You can e-mail me at rulesforrebels@gmail.com

  3. I am sooooo furious and disappointed that jobvent is no longer around. It REALLY saved me from accepting a bad job. My friend took the same job. She is miserable now and states that all that jobvent said about her employer was totally true.

Now we have these useless sites like glassdoor and jobitorial. Seems like the glowing reviews are fake, perhaps written by bootlickers or corporate wh4res. Boo!

  4. Jobvent was a great resource. Jobitorial is useless and it doesn't surprise me in the least that they will hand over user info on a silver platter. Some companies were probably sweating bullets after reading unbiased employee comments and "suggested" GlassDoor make an offer that couldn't be refused. Just another example of our freedom of speech being sold down the river for the highest bidder.

    1. Yeah, it's frustrating. I'm surprised someone hasn't stepped in and filled the void and provided a true job review sitethats not censored and has accuare info and lots of it on jobs. I wonder if it's fear of lawsuits or something.

  5. Thanks for the great thread and posts. I had figured one Ohio behemoth company, which I will not name, had bought Jobvent and "sanitized" it because the stuff on Vent was so entertaining/often real and the back and forth it was creating between: (disgruntled pussies; disgruntled good guys; real positive workers and bought positive posters) was truly dynamic and eye opening. Like most things Lawyers ruin everything and anybody interested in starting the new www.postalcoastal.com let me know I want to help and am copywrighting the new name I have come up with and URL. What do you think? Let's collaborate and if we do let's make it a smart and fair workplace. Best Steve gigmon@msn.com
